Edgar Motta inherited his coffee farm and began cultivating the Caturra and Castillo plants already on the land. His farm is called Buenavista, after the beautiful scenic views he sees while working on the farm. Edgar partnered with Inconexus to help preserve the environment on and around his farm.
With InConexus’ support, Edgar planted Pink Bourbon trees, a move he still considers one of the best decisions he’s ever made for his farm. His Pink Bourbon lots flourish at his 1,500-1,600 meters above sea level and produce higher cup scores and are more disease resistant. The higher-quality coffee Edgar is now producing enables him to preserve the forested land on his farm by maximizing value on the existing farmland.
Edgar also attributes his coffee’s superb quality to the diversity of soils, altitudes and ecosystems on his farm. He’s made extensive investments in infrastructure, including renovating drying areas and storage tanks and building a central wet mill that’s used by three neighboring farms owned by Edgar’s family members.
Edgar’s plans for the future involve replacing his Castillo trees with more Geisha and Typica varieties. To reduce his environmental footprint and enhance overall harvest uniformity, Edgar produces entirely Natural processed lots.
During the harvest Edgar hires laborers to help him pick ripe, red cherry. Once harvested, cherry is laid in thin layers on raised drying beds and raked frequently to ensure even drying, which takes approximately 30 days.
As part of his holistic renovation and improvement plans, Edgar has created meal plans for workers on the farm and provided more dignified working conditions.
Pink Bourbon was first "discovered" in Colombia in 2014. Farmers there believed it was a spontaneous hybrid of Red and Yellow Bourbon, similar to the Orange Bourbon mutation and the rest of the coffee world followed suit. Through recent genetic testing, however, it is now understood that Pink Bourbon is actually an Ethiopian Landrace imported anonymously to Colombia, most likely to help diversify the coffee population. While visibly similar, it stands apart from the Bourbon varieties that originated in Yemen.
