Complex savory and floral notes make Las Mercedes' SL28 a standout. Beginning with aromas of red plum, tangerine, and almond bark, the brewed cup features a creamy body with flavors of ginger, blackcurrant, and walnut. Date-like sweetness and pomelo acidity provide balance, leading to a stunning finish of sandalwood and jasmine.

93 Points from Coffee Review! "Sweet, deep, nut-toned but juicy... drink it for its grown-up dry chocolate, zesty lime and elderflower notes that emerge with just a little patience."

The Story

From its origins in Kenya in the 1930s, SL28 spread through Africa and is commonly grown in Latin America today. A relative of Bourbon, it is known for its exceptional cup quality and high yield. This limited lot is Finca Las Mercedes' second harvest of SL28, hailing from the same farm as La Avila Bourbon.

Within hours of harvest, the cherries are brought to the on-farm mill and quickly depulped, leaving a small amount of the mucilage on the outside of the beans. The coffee is left in a fermentation tank where enzymes help break down the remaining sweet, honey-like mucilage. After fermenting for 12-18 hours the coffee is sent through washing channels to completely clean it. The coffee is then dried on patios before being packaged and shipped to us.

Direct Trade

Owned by the 5th generation of the Ortiz Barriere family, Finca Las Mercedes is everything we look for in a Direct Trade partner—and we've worked with them since 2006. Currently led by our friend Lucia Ortiz, Las Mercedes has become one of the top quality coffee producers in El Salvador. In fact, a lot from their La Avila farm won the El Salvador Coffee of the Year competition in 2012. We take great pride in working with exceptional coffee producers, and Las Mercedes is one of the farms that rises to the top of the list every year.
