Laurina is a dwarf mutation of Bourbon with less caffeine than most coffee and a lovely flavor profile. Marmalade and graham cracker aromas lead to notes of starfruit, pineapple, and grapefruit in the cup. The body is exceptionally soft, with golden kiwi acidity. A complex Sauvignon Blanc note emerges in the finish alongside more marmalade.

Available whole bean in an 8oz pouch or 4oz pouch. This coffee roasts and ships on Tuesdays only. Order by 4PM CT on Monday to be included in Tuesday's roast.

The Story

With about half the caffeine content of most Coffea arabica, Laurina is the perfect pick for those who are trying to cut down on caffeine while still drinking something exceptional.

Though it's not common today, Laurina was first classified in the 1940s on the island of Réunion, east of Madagascar. This dwarf mutation of Bourbon is highly susceptible to leaf rust, which makes it too risky for many coffee producers to grow.

The Herrera brothers' patience and willingness to experiment has garnered Café Granja La Esperanza numerous accolades from the SCAA and Roasters Guild, and they've had much success with unusual varieties like Sudan Rume, Mokka, and now Laurina.

La Esperanza is also known for its innovative production and labor practices. Optimal work conditions are a priority at the estate, where workers are paid fair wages and child labor is not permitted.

Key Production Notes from Granja La Esperanza:

All coffees are hand-picked at peak ripeness and pre-fermented in-cherry for 8 hours.

After a 36-hour fermentation and 48 hours in a drying silo, the parchment is sun-dried on African raised beds for about 15 days until it reaches a moisture content level of 11%, then stored in Grain Pro bags.

Every coffee lot is sampled and cupped by the Quality Control Lab at Granja La Esperanza before being sent to the dry mill.
