This sweet, juicy peaberry from the Galápagos Islands introduces itself with aromas of nectarine and caramel. Golden raisin and honeydew notes in the cup are accompanied by an almond undertone and mandarin acidity. Pear and honey emerge in the lingering finish.

The Story

The Galápagos Islands are a beautiful Ecuadorian archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Pacific Ocean, 906km from continental Ecuador. The Galápagos are famous for being the origin of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, due to the vast number of unique species that he found there during his voyage in 1836, including the famous 100-year-old giant tortoises.

Galápagos is not only home to birds, sea lions, iguanas, dolphins, and gulls, but also to the exotic coffee of La Tortuga. The Cooperativa de Cafetaleros de Galapagos, composed of more than 100 producers, started in 1997 with the purpose of protecting the coffee industry while conserving the natural environment. All the farmers in the Galápagos are conscious of the animals and plants that inhabit in the island. In fact, they consider themselves temporary inhabitants and strongly believe that the real owners of the land are the animals and the native plants.

This lot is comprised exclusively of peaberries sorted from the larger La Tortuga lot.

The Peaberry Mutation

Peaberries are the result of a natural mutation in which only one seed within the coffee cherry is fertilized. Instead of two coffee beans with flat faces and round backs within the cherry, a single round bean is the result. Peaberries constitute a small percentage of each harvest and they are typically sorted into peaberry-only lots for consistency during the roasting process, since they are denser than regular coffee beans.
