Coffee Review Assessment

Panama Elida Estate Natural

Reviewed: November 2009

Aroma 9

Acidity 8

Body 8

Flavor 9

Aftertaste 9

Origin: Boquete growing region, western Panama.

Roast (Agtron): (55/79)

OVERALL RATING: 95

Notes: Produced by the award-winning Elida Estate, this is a dry- or “natural-” processed coffee, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit is removed, as is the case with the wet-processed or “washed” coffees more typical of Panama and Central America. Roasted at PT’s Coffee, where the motto is “without the love, it’s just coffee.” Visit www.ptscoffee.com or call 888-678-JAVA for more information.

Blind assessment: Complex aromatic profile – spice notes read as cinnamon and cardamom, ripe stone-fruit sweetness and suggestions of chocolate. In the cup a syrupy mouthfeel supports an intense fruit character: honey-like Casaba melon, plum, nectarine. Cinnamon makes a return appearance in the smooth, caramelly finish.

Who should drink it: Intense flavor-saturated nose, cup and finish.

Origin: Usulutan Department, El Salvador.

Roast (Agtron): (53/74)

OVERALL RATING: 92

Notes: From the same trees as the 2006 El Salvador Cup of Excellence first-place winner, this lot is made up entirely of beans from the heirloom Bourbon variety of Arabica. PT’s is a quality-oriented wholesale/retail specialty roaster with a wide and refined selection of coffee blends and origins. The PT’s motto is “without the love, it’s just coffee.” Visit www.ptscoffee.com or call 888-678-5282 for more information.

Blind assessment: Round aroma displaying notes of nut, flowers and fruit. Intensely bright and fruity acidity, delicate mouthfeel and nuanced flavors suggesting Meyer lemon, soft, sweet-toned chocolate, toast. The flavors linger and sweeten even more in a long finish.

Who should drink it: Bright, sweet and satisfying.
