Colombia Finca Santa Maria

We believe that exceptional coffee starts its journey at the farm which is one of the many reasons why we are committed to Direct Trade partnerships. Owner Jeff Taylor notes that “truly great coffee has to start with truly great farmers – those whose interests are in making and collaborating to produce the best coffee possible. We seek out the best producers in the world to be our partners and value these relationships.” Armando Benavides is one of these respected partners.

Finca Santa Maria has been growing coffee for almost 40 years with Armando leading the efforts since the early 1990s when he purchased the farm. Located high in the mountains of the Nariño region of Colombia, the farm benefits from a high elevation of almost 1900 meters and rich, volcanic soils. Sustainable farming techniques and soil conservation initiatives have produced amazing results for their Caturra variety and the farm has become a role model for sustainable agriculture and regional management practices in Colombia. In the spring of 2013, bandits raided the farm, leaving Benavides and his family with the possibility of losing their entire harvest. With help from PT’s Coffee and all those generous enough to donate to the fundraising efforts, Armando was able to rebuild and continues to produce excellent coffee to this day. Learn more about Finca Santa Maria in this video.

We look forward to hosting Armando and hope that you will join us in welcoming him. Until then, go forth and drink great coffee!
